ACTIONS: Energy use in healthcare settings

Wasting energy increases carbon emissions and costs money. Hospitals and clinics can save energy in the following ways:

  • Install LED lighting, which can be adjusted to simulate daylight, improving patient and staff health and morale as well.
  • Turn off lights that aren’t needed; install motion sensors and timers where appropriate.
  • Keep medical-grade computers on and ready for use, but install apps that let them sleep, using less energy until needed.
  • Use non-electrical medical devices where possible.
  • Install solar panels, wind turbines, and geothermal heat pumps to generate renewable energy.
  • Monitor and adjust room air exchange frequency, based on whether operating rooms and patient rooms are in use.
